Agile Coach, what is the job?

The term “coach” is a posture of the “attendant”. The Agile coach is an actor of change.

The coach, historically, is a car that picks up passengers at one place and drops them off at another.

The sports coach takes a team to a level and encourages it to progress, to surpass itself.

The “Professional Coach” supports people or teams for the development of their potential and their know-how within the framework of professional objectives.

What is the Agile coach?

The “Agile Coach” is at the same time trainer, coach, facilitator, sometimes with a touch of prescriber. He adapts his intervention to the moment and needs of the team, to the context in which the coach interacts. He challenges management to invite them to break with organizational habits.

The Agile coach bases its operation on an iterative, incremental approach aimed at delivering products with added value. It uses skills from the Agile Manifesto and associated frameworks. He develops his skills through continuous learning.

The objective of Agile support

  • Bring out the team’s goal
  • Implement the strategic management of the members of the Executive Committee by highlighting the significant progress of the teams:
    • in terms of autonomy
    • of application or product with added value
    • continuity of operation after departure

Traditionally, the role of Agile Coach is held by an independent, consultant or freelance. The latter will be in charge of deploying rituals, developing team skills and supporting decision-makers in the transition from a corporate culture to a customer culture.

Evolution of the Agile Coach profession

In strategic management, the coach will be the appropriate posture for management 3.0. Management, leader of the transformation, must give an important place to the achievements of the team. The management will create the atmosphere conducive to collective achievements.

The role of the Agile coach is evolving. Integrated into organizations, it becomes a standard job responding to the role of team leader-facilitator, or manager 3.0.

This is why the independent Agile coach must evolve to keep his gaze of the king’s fool, and allow the implementation of effective executive coaching: one hypothesis that of Agile Mentor.
