Strategic management aligns operational and market know-how to ensure the sustainability of the company.
To function, strategic management is based on 3 dimensions:
1-The management of the organization as a structure
2- Operational management to manage people
3-Cross-functional management to coordinate projects
We will see a little further on how Agile, living management upsets the 3 classic dimensions of strategic management.
The tools of strategic management for what use
First of all, to set up its corporate governance, the decision-maker (s) must have a real-time diagnosis of the company’s capacities, deploy the strategy and make the strategic choices and trade-offs.
The speed of execution of corporate governance will determine its time-to-market and will be an index of the corporate culture deployed.
Common points between the different strategic management tools
Each strategic management tool is a management model that structures the thinking around 3 complementary axes:
1- The audit of my internal and external environment allowing me to achieve my ambition
2- My ability to deploy my ambition, to structure the intention and to deploy the change
3- Have at all times a vision of what is happening internally and externally to make my strategic choices
Non-exhaustive list of tools associated with strategic management
1- Audit of my internal and external environment:
- identify my strengths and weaknesses with SWOT analysis, Lean startup, Porter’s diagram to design your competitive strategy.
- The cause and effect diagram: the Pestel or Ichikawa fishbone diagram, the 5 why, the Lean System ..to identify complex problems.
2- Deploy your strategic management
- the Stacey matrix to define its management or leadership approach to be deployed, or the Cynefin model
- Align decisions by inviting operational management to seize strategic desires and commit to implementing them with an X matrix, Hoshin Kanri, for example.
3- Make my strategic choices
When all the elements of point 1 and 2 are in place, I will make sure that my decisions meet a need. For this, I establish my business plan or start my dialogue with my clients if I am Agile using the following tools:
- Business Model Canvas and value model proposition to establish a dialogue with its customers
- Go product roadmap
- OKR Board …
You will find in French version a complete presentation of these tools 3 last tools on the blog Project Management
All the digital tools used by strategic management or to establish its e-reputation are listed in the digital transformation section.
The tools of strategic management and management.
Traditionally, the strategic diagnosis is then declined in terms of operational management and transversal management to establish the strategic plan and deploy it.
Once the strategic plan has been established, decisions are deployed by operational management in production chains or transversally as part of business projects.
The operational management then ensures the proper execution of the strategy by the production and project teams.
This mode of operation is shaken up in Agile or organic approaches, by involving all the actors concerned by decisions as soon as possible.
It thus reduces decision-making layers by bringing operational teams closer to the end customer.
This operating mode reinforces the added value delivered, improves time-to-market by reducing misunderstandings and unnecessary round trips. Discussions between operational teams and end users make it possible to adjust customer needs in “real time” and adapt products as closely as possible to demand.
Management 3.0 emphasizes Agile values which promote interaction between internal and external stakeholders of the company, thus reducing the number of decision-making layers.
These profound changes in management postures also lead to a change in corporate culture by inviting the customer to the very heart of production.
Changes in corporate cultures will be listed in the section you said culture.
