Complexity vs simplicity in management #1

Support, transform

Supporting, transforming into management, means developing a mobilizing Management in which the ability of a manager to provide the necessary indications to his teams will be based on the Listening-Questioning-Transforming triad. The manager’s mission can be summed up in 8 points :

  1. Go from complexity to simplicity, simplify
  2. Outline, map, order
  3. Understand your environment
  4. Support each and every member of the team in their quest for meaning
  5. Reach out, help
  6. Set your organization in motion, activate
  7. Deploy with discernment, discern
  8. Make harmonious and fluid any act that engages others, harmonize

1-Go from complexity to simplicity

Simplicity and complexity are never opposed. Simplicity is the culmination of a complex process. The gesture harmonizes, becomes fluid and simple.

Take a cue from calligraphy. Learning to write seems difficult at first, and yet it takes practice. Writing can become second nature. The calligrapher takes pleasure in the beauty of the writing obtained and shares the result. Complexity disappears in front of beauty. The complexity is organized and gives meaning.

Flying: simple or complex?

A dream for some, flying is the object of multiple experiments
From dreams to mass transport: the plane is a controlled production

2-Outline, map, order

Manage complexity through simplicity

In management, giving meaning comes down to making concepts, visions and ideals understandable and making them emerge

Many of the tools and change processes offered to deal with complexity are established in simple shapes like square, circle, triangle. The known geometric shape thus suggests a pragmatic reading of its content. The system is orderly, leaving little room for imagination or error.

The Cynefin model

For example, the Cynefin model proposes a classification in 4 boxes. Therefore, it is a tool built on the basis of a square. The user is invited to experiment, then to classify the solutions to a problem according to the difficulties of implementation.

Tools to clarify, organize, support

We are accustomed to a form of representation of our thought patterns thus leading to a sequencing of tasks.

Looking at a system as a whole is still the prerogative of a few. The mobilizing manager must include in his bag a global understanding, a vision of complex systems. Communication is the basis of strategic management.

The square, the cube

Many models are built on the basis of the square. It offers a solid structure on the basis of the number 4

John Potter’s change curve illustrated by 4 colors, in his article, CHANGE MANAGEMENT: THE TOOLS TO SUPPORT YOUR APPROACH, perfectly shows this desire to translate with simplicity what we do not understand.

The circle, the triangle

Organize power, the circle invites collaboration. The triangle has a hierarchy. The dodecahedron is expressed by several overlapping circles or not, inviting us to multiply our interactions and to move from one to the other quickly.

The circle and the triangle make organizational models audible and understandable and invite everyone to identify their place in the model.

Thus, cutting out, mapping, ordering is part of the immutable reflexes. All of the strategic management tools, or the Lean system or the Agile manifesto, offer everyone a method to reappropriate this reflex.

Challenge social intelligence: the dynamic spiral

The dynamic spiral is a program proposal that invites us to read the world and its evolution through the prism of human behavior in his desire to build a sustainable world. Depending on the evolution and on his understanding of the world, man organizes his social life and his interactions with his environment.

Tools which are then submitted to the group to translate, regulate and challenge social intelligence and promote the emergence of a collective.

3-Understand your environment

Simplicity and emotional intelligence

It is promoting the emergence of the team, it is promoting group harmony. It means supporting everyone in their quest for meaning and bringing the group into a state of FLow. It is the skill of the manager to allow the emergence of this area, where complexity becomes a fluid, simple and natural gesture. It is the moment when the Ego disappears to make emerge, build, produce something bigger than oneself.

Daniel Goleman, in his book “Emotional intelligence”, shows how from an early age the child and his mother harmonize. Understanding and encouraging the expression of these emotions will allow the child to develop his empathy towards the emotions of others.

As a team, synchronizing your actions, listening to and understanding the complementarities brought by each member of the team and providing support to the client in an altruistic way, belongs to emotional intelligence.

This emotional intelligence is the group’s ability to enter into sufficient calm to free itself from its own operational constraints and to listen to its client. The proposed solutions will help the latter. In this zone of harmony, this Flow according to the Americans, the development of solutions will follow the Cynefin principle, without adding pain or additional work.

L'intelligence émotionnelle : Intégrale

When we know that emotional intelligence will be one of the ten most important skills in 2022, according to the World Economic Forum (The Future of Jobs Report 2018), it is undeniable that this skill is becoming one of the managerial qualities essential to develop, discover the excellent article by Médina Cayer,
